Jamie Shackleton won his place back in the Leeds United squad last summer during pre-season after being expected to go – but now, those doubts are re-emerging with his contract set to expire.
Shackleton spent last season on loan at Millwall in the Championship. He was intermittent under Gary Rowett, playing 37 times – but starting only 18. He returned with his future at Leeds in huge doubt.
His agent even said that he would be pursuing a permanent deal for his client. But he has since been back in the Leeds side this season, playing 13 times. Illness could prevent him from playing on Tuesday.
But, there are murmurs about Shackleton’s long-term future, beginning to emerge. He remains out of contract at the end of the season and there will likely be a number of clubs after Shackleton’s signature.
Daniel Farke was asked on Monday if Shackleton could stay at Elland Road with the player due to leave on a free as things stand. He told the club’s YouTube channel that Leeds will “look after” Shackleton.

“He’s best in a Leeds shirt, that’s for sure. Really like Jamie, really rate him. So flexible, can play different positions. Played right-back, left-back, midfield. I can remember one top game on the left at Ipswich.
“He gives 100% always, lots of identification with Leeds. You always want to have such a player – not always in the spot light. He’s always reliable, he’s there whenever you need him. We’ll look after Jamie.”
Daniel Farke hints at new Leeds deal for player Jamie Shackleton
Keeping Shackleton is good in terms of an option from the bench for numerous positions, and a player that is always the one winning the bleep tests in pre-season – but also one with an impeccable attitude.
One crucial reason that may convince Leeds over a new deal though, is what he offers as a club-trained homegrown player in terms of registration. Will he want to stay? Or may he want to try something new.
You could hardly blame him if he wants to do the latter, given he is never going to be a starting option for this Leeds side. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks or months.
