Jamie Shackleton is set to leave Leeds United on a permanent basis this summer with his agent Hayden Evans telling Phil Hay’s Athletic podcast that it is time for the on-loan Millwall midfielder to leave Elland Road for good.

Shackleton, 23, went on loan to Millwall last summer in a deal that includes a permanent option. The England U20 midfielder has played 35 times in all competitions for the Lions – but the versatile ace has only started 16 times.

Indeed, Shackleton – who has played 79 times for Leeds – has only completed 90 minutes on nine occasions. His deal at Leeds ends in June 2024 but the chances of Shackleton returning to Leeds and having an impact is small.

Speaking to Hay’s podcast, Shackleton’s agent Evans has admitted that he will be looking for a permanent exit for his client this summer. He says Shackleton needs to be starting and his loan at Millwall has been “frustrating”.

“It’s been frustrating for Jamie. He’s not getting the minutes, but the side are winning. When he’s come on, he’s done well and Millwall have applauded that. But not enough minutes. He’s got a year at Leeds,” Shackleton said.

“It is probably something where we need to find him a permanent move away from Leeds. He needs to be starting games, and he’s good enough. The quality he has has not diminished in any way. He trains hard, works hard.”

The Leeds academy product, who was important for Leeds during Marcelo Bielsa’s era, is now 23. He is hardly a youngster any more and he needs to go. He needs to kickstart his career and find a place where he is adored.

A move to a Championship club for a couple of million quid makes sense. But one where he will have assurances that he will start games on a regular basis. One thing is for sure, Shackleton needs to leave Leeds this summer.

Evans’ comments come after reports this week that Tyler Roberts and Cody Drameh are set to go. The YEP say a permanent exit for Drameh is ‘inevitable’ before pre-season, while the YEP say a move to QPR is likely for Roberts.
