Board member says £6.8m Leeds target can go, have ‘accepted’ his decision to exit

Bayern Munich board member and honorary president Uli Hoeness has been quoted by German outlet Sport 1 as saying that he has “accepted” Alexander Nubel‘s decision that he wants to leave – with Leeds reportedly interested.

Nubel, 26, is back at Bayern after spending the last two seasons on loan at Monaco. He played 48 of Monaco’s 49 games last term. He returns to Bayern, instead of joining Monaco permanently. His £94k-a-week deal ends in 2025.

Last week, newspaper Bild said Leeds were battling Stuttgart in a two-horse race to land the German stopper. The Mail followed up that initial report by saying that Leeds wanted Nubel on a permanent basis, willing to splash £6.8m.

Then on Monday, German magazine Kicker said Stuttgart had held talks for Nubel – but that talks were unsuccessful as Stuttgart want a loan. Bayern want to sell. Leeds are keen to buy – but Nubel is not convinced by a Leeds move.

Now, Bayern board member Hoeness – who has renowned for being candid in front of cameras – says Bayern have accepted he wants to go, and will not stand in his way: “We accepted his decision. If he finds a club, he can go.”

Nubel would be a wonderful signing. While his stats in goal for Monaco do not jump off the page – just 10 clean sheets in 48 games for Monaco last season – it would have been a lot worse for the Ligue 1 side, without Nubel.

But there is no doubt that Nubel is a goalkeeper who should be competing in European competition. At the very least, a club in the top tier domestically. So, a move to Leeds is very ambitious and surely, out of our range.
