Premier League club forced into bizarre public U-turn after Leeds United held talks to sign one of their players

Leeds United are on the hunt for more new signings this summer, with Daniel Farke looking to add to the three that he’s already brought in at Elland Road.

So far this summer, Leeds United have added three new names to their squad in Jaka Bijol, Lukas Nmecha, and now Sebastiaan Bornauw.

On Tuesday, Leeds United announced the signing of Bornauw who joins from Wolfsburg in a deal worth around £5million, following Nmecha to Elland Road after the striker was let go by Wolfsburg.

The former Middlesbrough and Preston loan man bolsters a rather weak-looking strike force at Leeds United as things stand, with Joel Piroe, Patrick Bamford, Mateo Joseph and now Nmecha being Daniel Farke’s options.

The Whites are missing someone with real Premier League quality in their boots. So far this summer Leeds have been linked with a number of strikers, one being Callum Wilson, who may now be finally free to seal a move to West Yorkshire.

The latest on Callum Wilson to Leeds United as cryptic update revealed

Leeds United are interested in signing Wilson on a free transfer this summer. But when it looked like he was leaving St James’ Park, Newcastle United offered Wilson a new contract to stay at the club, on something similar to a pay-as-you-play basis. It was surprising news and after that, Wilson’s links to Leeds went cold.

Newcastle are expected to clarify the situation soon. But interestingly, Wilson was taken off of the Newcastle United club website’s official squad list, per The Shields Gazette, before then being re-added in a strange turn of events. On top of that, the Premier League’s official website lists the 33-year-old Wilson as a free agent.

The deadline has gone for Premier League clubs to inform the league of the players they intend to release this summer, whilst player contracts officially expired at the end of June, so Wilson may technically be a free agent now, we just don’t have official confirmation as such.

Leeds United have a three-striker shortlist and Callum Wilson is on it

Less than a month ago, reports revealed how Leeds United were in talks to sign Wilson on a free transfer, until the news came that Newcastle were set to hand him a new deal.

But the latest suggestions from the Newcastle United and Premier League websites may suggest that those talks have broken down, and that Wilson is about to become a free agent.

It’ll certainly be of interest to Leeds, but Wilson isn’t the only striker that Farke is looking at this summer: in June, reports revealed how Leeds United have a three-striker shortlist consisting of Wilson, Jamie Vardy, and Evan Ferguson.

Vardy remains a free agent whilst Ferguson’s future at Brighton remains up in the air. Farke may well have other names in the crosshairs, too, and the pursuit of Wilson may have long passed.

But if Leeds United want a proven Premier League striker, albeit an expensive one and an injury-prone one, then Wilson could be the answer.
