‘Agents have called’… £1.75m Leeds target says clubs have opened talks to sign him this month

Leeds United have been regularly linked with a move for Swedish goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist but it is unclear just how genuine our interest is at this stage – but Tornqvist says clubs are now in contact.

It was Kristoffer Klaesson that went between the sticks on New Year’s Day, with Illan Meslier suspended and Karl Darlow injured – picking up a dislocated thumb. He kept a clean sheet against Birmingham City.

So, Leeds have three goalkeepers – with Klaesson even deemed to be happy at Elland Road. But, there is interest in Sweden U21 stopper Tornqvist, who has impressed for top-tier side Mjallby during 2023.

Leeds have scouted the stopper, who himself has admitted a move to England is a “dream”. Leeds are not alone, with Serie A sides Genoa and Sassuolo keen. Mjallby are said to want a fee of £1.75 million.

Speaking to Swedish site Hallandsposten this week, Tornqvist was asked about interest in his services – and whether he could leave Mjallby in January. He says clubs are in contact, and hinted at the exit door.

“Without saying much, clubs and agents have called Mjällby, but I don’t want to say more. I love Mjällby, but all the players want to get out. It has to work out if you’re going to leave. We’ll see what happens.”

He is a talented goalkeeper and a recent call-up to Sweden’s senior squad for a training camp is proof of that. But, Leeds simply do not need him. Klaesson’s second-ever outing has reaffirmed that position.

He proved that Leeds are in good hands if we are without the first-two options, and is more than good enough to become second choice if Meslier or Darlow are ever on the sidelines for a prolonged spell.
