£5m Leeds target ‘most likely’ of PL club’s five players in his position to be sold

A report from The Chronicle states that Karl Darlow is the ‘most-likely’ goalkeeper to be sold by Newcastle United this summer, with the Toon boasting five first-team options – amid reports that Leeds are interested in a £5m move.

Darlow, 32, has returned to Tyneside after a loan at Hull last season – conceding only 14 goals in 12 games, keeping five clean sheets. Spending the last nine years at Newcastle, he has only managed 100 games. He is set for a move.

Graham Smyth says Alexander Nubel and Darlow are the two goalkeepers on our shortlist at the moment, as Leeds look to bring in a replacement for Illan Meslier. The Frenchman is likely to go, while Joel Robles is in Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle’s no.1 is Nick Pope – making him unsellable. Loris Karius has just signed a new one-year deal with the Toon, so the German is staying. It leaves Darlow, Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie – the latter a back-up option.

Gillespie is unlikely to be going anywhere. His presence helps registration. So, Darlow or Dubravka? The latter went on loan to Manchester United last season and his future is up in the air. But Darlow is ‘most-likely’ to leave the club.

The Sun reported recently that Newcastle want £5m for Darlow, who was guilty of a bit of a clanger on Monday at Ibrox. He came on at half-time but his poor pass saw Sam Lammers score an equaliser for Rangers, under Darlow.

But Darlow is a top goalkeeper, and ideal for a Championship club. He showed as much at Hull last season. He has plenty of experience, promotion know how with Newcastle and at £5m, he would not cost the world. Good signing.
