Sunderland are interested in signing a free agent that left Leeds United at the end of his contract, as Regis Le Bris looks to strengthen his new side ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Leeds have been busy removing an entire squad’s worth of players in order to reduce the wage bill and balance the books. Six have been sold, five on loan, plenty gone on a free and more expected to depart.

Eight players that finished last term under Daniel Farke have gone in the form of Jaidon Anthony, Connor Roberts, Glen Kamara, Kris Klaesson, Archie Gray, Liam Cooper, Jamie Shackleton and Charlie Cresswell.

Leeds have brought in four new signings, adding Joe Rodon, Alex Cairns, Joe Rothwell and Jayden Bogle. Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober are back, while a number of youngsters are pushing to get a call-up.

Sunderland now want player that has exited Leeds on a free

But Leeds’ depth has been completely removed and the club are expected to bring in a number of new signings moving forward. One player that has gone is Ian Poveda, leaving Elland Road on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old is a free agent after four and a half years on the books at Elland Road, following his move from Man City. He played just 30 Leeds games, going on loan three times including Sheffield Wednesday.

We Are Sunderland now report that while Wednesday were expected to sign him permanently, but it has not yet materialised. Now, Sunderland are keen on landing the two-time Colombia international on a free.

New Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris linked with Leeds move

A year ago, Leeds had just waved goodbye to Sam Allardyce and Leeds were looking for a new manager ahead of a push to gain an instant return to the Premier League. Of course, Daniel Farke was picked.

But actually, new Sunderland gaffer Le Bris was a target for Leeds after guiding Lorient to a ninth-placed finished in Ligue 1. A move didn’t materialise and he stayed at Lorient, which has ended in relegation.

It might have seen Le Bris work with Poveda last summer but now, the Frenchman could get his chance to work with Manchester City academy product Poveda, a player Liam Cooper said is “misunderstood”.
