Steven Gerrard is working on a deal to sign free agent that is currently on Leeds United’s radar

Leeds United are well-stocked between the sticks but one free agent goalkeeper that is on the radar at Elland Road has now emerged as a target for Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.

Illan Meslier now looks set to stay after a few loose links away from Leeds, after the Frenchman was made a vice-captain at Elland Road. He is still the club’s no.1 goalkeeper, and could pass 200 outings next term.

Second choice is still Karl Darlow, who started against German side Hannover on Wednesday. Darlow has only had a handful of outings for Leeds in the last 12 months but he remains back-up to no.1 Meslier.

Kris Klaesson has left for Polish side Rakow on a permanent basis, and has been replaced by the returning Alex Cairns. It is unlikely that Cairns will get a chance next term but there is always a possibility of injury.

Goalkeeper on Leeds radar now being eyed by Gerrard

That has not stopped Leeds from compiling a list of options between the sticks if Meslier does end up going an one option Leeds have considered is Slovakia player Marek Rodak, who is now a free agent.

Leeds were touted as a suitor for 27-year-old Rodak last summer and now, the two-time Championship winner is a free agent after his contract at Premier League outfit Fulham came to an end last month.

But with Leeds no longer needing a goalkeeper and focusing on other areas of the squad, The Whites are about to miss out on Rodak to Gerrard’s Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Romano posted on X: “Al Ettifaq are working on deal to sign Marek Rodák, interest concrete and talks taking place for former Fulham GK. He could be next to join Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff.”

Rodak would have been a very smart signing at Leeds

But only if Meslier left. Now a part of a three-man leadership group alongside Ethan Ampadu and Pascal Struijk, the Frenchman will stay at Elland Road and remain a key part of this side for years to come.

But if he had gone, Rodak would have been a top addition especially on a free transfer. A player that has more than 20 caps for his country, and a goalkeeper that knows what it takes to win The Championship.
