Leeds United will be on the lookout for a possible no.10 signing in the January transfer window and one option the Whites considered in the summer now has 11 goals and assists this season.

Leeds failed to get one in during the summer as a replacement for Georginio Rutter. Brenden Aaronson returned to Elland Road, but he is the only natural 10 currently in the Leeds squad able to play the role.

Plenty were linked. The likes of Sheffield United’s Gus Hamer was a target and towards the end of the window, Hungary star Roland Sallai was considered. But Leeds continue to lack competition for Aaronson.

Ahead of the January window, Leeds could make a move for a no.10 having failed to get one over the line in the summer. Graham Smyth expects Leeds to try and sign a new attacking midfielder come January.

Leeds United wanted Alvyn Sanches in the summer window

France-born Switzerland U21 star Alvyn Sanches was linked with Leeds in the summer. Reports said Leeds were battling Celtic and Burnley for playmaker Sanches, with his price tag reduced to £3m from £4m.

That came after Sanches had produced a goal and an assist once every four games, laying on 21 in his 84 senior games for Swiss side Lausanne. Those numbers have improved even further since links with Leeds.

Sanches has managed 11 goals and assists in 20 games, more than one every two games this term. There is no doubt that his value will have climbed, but his contract situation could bring that price back down.

Whether Leeds reignite their summer interest remains to be seen. But if they have kept an eye on Sanches they will have been impressed – especially, as Sanches has more goals and assists than any Leeds player.

While Sanches’ form has come in the Swiss league, a competition probably below the standard of the Championship, there is clearly potential in Sanches who can also play deeper in central midfield.

If Leeds are to add competition for the 10 role alongside Aaronson and perhaps, replace on-loan Joe Rothwell in the long-term, then Leeds could do a lot worse than Sanches but his value will have gone up.
