The goalkeeper department is one that is set for more change at Leeds United this summer with Illan Meslier expected to leave and The 49ers set to bring in a replacement.

Meslier has been dropped and now, Daniel Farke is considering Meslier’s future at Leeds with Leicester City and Rennes interested. Champions League-chasing Strasbourg are also keen on signing Meslier.

Plenty of goalkeepers have been linked. Aaron Ramsdale’s relegation release clause has caught the eye of Leeds, but England ace Ramsdale has now been relegated on three occasions from the Premier League.

Newcastle’s Nick Pope and Burnley stopper James Trafford are also targets. Trafford has been nominated for the Championship Player of the Season award alongside Dan James, but is likely to go to Newcastle.

Sam Johnstone has now been linked with a move to Leeds United

That would make Pope become available and certainly, a move to a Premier League club like Leeds is viable for England international Pope. However, he would be an expensive signing given his Toon wages.

Leeds are now being linked with Sam Johnstone at Wolves, a fourth England international to be touted with a summer move to Elland Road. He has lost his place at Wolves to Jose Sa, and would cost £10m.

Indeed, 32-year-old Johnstone will be on the market this summer despite only joining Wolves in the summer of 2024 from Crystal Palace. Wolves are likely to be open to a sale if Leeds do come calling.

Johnstone has conceded more goals vs Leeds than any other side

Leeds fans are fully aware of Johnstone’s qualities. A four-time England international, Johnstone has faced Leeds with West Brom, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and even Doncaster Rovers during an earlier loan spell.

Despite facing other teams more, Johnstone has conceded more goals against Leeds than any other team – just one clean sheet in 10 games against The Whites with a whopping 18 conceded during his career.

It includes a 4-0 loss to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds in the Argentine’s first season, and then the 5-0 loss to The Whites during Leeds’ first season in the Premier League under Bielsa, when Leeds icon Raphinha ran riot.

Johnstone was also the man in goal for Crystal Palace’s 5-1 win under Javi Gracia, the season in which Leeds were relegated. A £10m fee is good value, but Leeds fans will surely be hoping for better in goal.
