Daniel Farke has confirmed Wilfried Gnonto has trained ahead of Leeds United’s trip to Birmingham City on Saturday.
Farke was speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon, where he was quizzed on Gnonto’s situation after a chaotic 24 hours.
As per the Mail, Gnonto asked to be left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town to ramp up speculation surrounding his future.
It is said Gnonto has grown frustrated at Leeds‘ reluctance to sanction a move back to the Premier League this summer following relegation in May.
Gnonto started Leeds’ Championship opener against Cardiff City but with just three weeks of the window remaining, has made his wishes clear.
Farke issues update on Gnonto
Farke was once again coy on questions surrounding Gnonto’s future, but hinted he does remain part of his plans and has trained ahead of the game.
He said: “Nothing to add to what I spoke about. Willy was today in training, trained really good. Let’s see what happens. All players under contract are part of my plans.”
On that basis, it appears as though Gnonto will be in the squad for the trip to Birmingham unless something drastic happens over the next 48 hours.
In the short-term, this is good news as Leeds’ squad is looking extremely threadbare with injuries already into double figures at this early point of the season.
However, at some point, either Farke, Gnonto or the 49ers are going to have to come out and publicly address the issue to prevent speculation from spreading.
