Phil Hay says ‘fantastic’ Leeds player currently in ‘stand-off’ with 49ers

Wilfried Gnonto is currently in a stand-off with Leeds United over his future.

That is according to Phil Hay, who provided the update earlier this month after last night’s developments, with Gnonto having reportedly asked to be left out of the squad for the game against Shrewsbury Town.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke commented on the situation after the game, confirming Gnonto was unavailable, but not because of injury problems.

As per the Mail, Gnonto is said to have grown frustrated with Leeds over their reluctance to sell him as he targets a return to the Premier League.

Everton are the side who have been the most heavily linked with a move for the 19-year-old, and could now ‘revisit’ their interest after the latest development.

Leeds and Gnonto in stand-off over future

Gnonto is a player San Francisco 49ers Enterprises have shown no desire to sell this summer despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Leeds’ owners see him as someone who can play a huge role in helping the Whites earn promotion from the Championship at the first attempt, with his debut campaign at Elland Road earning him several plaudits, including from Gary Neville who labelled him as ‘fantastic’.

However, Gnonto’s decision to ask to be left out on Wednesday night is a significant development in the saga, as he has now made his position evidently clear.

Leeds are not in a position where they have to sell Gnonto as he still has four years left on his contract and no relegation release clause.

As such, they should hold firm in their stance that he is not for sale, or seek to earn every last penny they can to ensure as a higher fee as possible is brought in.
