Leeds United now face battle with Sunderland for potential Ivan Toney replacement

If any conclusions have been made from Leeds United’s first 10 Premier League games, it is that Leeds need more in attack and something needs to be done about it in January.

Robbie Evans might say Leeds are close to the PSR border, but if Daniel Farke’s side are to avoid the drop, it might be that the club needs to make some attacking signings come the middle stage of the season.

Loan deals might still be a possibility, while any permanent signings may force the club to cash in on a current player. Willy Gnonto and Pascal Struijk have been identified as possible sales to aid Leeds’ PSR.

Well, one option Leeds are considering is Coventry City striker Haji Wright. Brenden Aaronson’s USMNT teammate is on fire at Frank Lampard’s side and his form is not going unnoticed by those at Elland Road.

Leeds now face Sunderland competition for Haji Wright

Wright has nine goals and two assists in 15 appearances for Coventry, and that form has alerted Leeds. But according to LeedsUnited.News insider Graeme Bailey, Leeds are not the only club looking at Wright.

Indeed, Leeds are battling Sunderland, Burnley, and Wolves for Wright’s signature ahead of January, while Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli are considering a move with Ivan Toney looking to return to England.

Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that Wright is aware of the interest and Lampard faces a fight to keep him: “The interest in Haji Wright is high and the feeling is that he could very well be on the move in January.

“Frank Lampard does not want to sell, but the player is well aware of the top-flight interest. Seemingly there is a very good chance he could move in the New Year,” Bailey continued, on Wright’s situation.

Sunderland have already beaten Leeds to several signings

With Sunderland now in the mix for Wright, Leeds’ chances of being able to convince the American to move to Elland Road are dwindling. Sunderland beat Leeds to three signings in the summer window.

Leeds bid £22m for Habib Diarra, before Sunderland signed him for £30m. Noah Sadiki admitted he had an offer from Leeds but chose Sunderland, while Leeds held talks for Reinildo Mandava on a free.

Sunderland won the race for all three, willing to pay more than Leeds could offer. Not only that, but the Black Cats look like they are going to avoid a relegation fight while Leeds are right in the thick of it.

Suppose Wright is to choose the Premier League over a move to Saudi Arabia. In that case, Sunderland look a much more attractive proposal than Leeds right now, especially given they have money to spend.
