New players continue to be linked with Leeds United every week despite Daniel Farke’s side not yet able to categorically say whether they will be in the Premier League, or the Championship.
Daniel Farke might be “100% convinced” that Leeds will be playing Premier League football next term. But, it is impossible to tell at this stage with Leeds slipping into third place and six games left to play.
A win against Middlesbrough tonight could see The Whites go top, or remain third if Burnley manage to beat Derby and Sheffield United can rectify the loss at Oxford United with a win against Millwall.
However, new players continue to be linked. This week, Leeds have been linked with former Huddersfield midfielder Brahima Diarra and now French reports say a Ligue 1 defender is on the Elland Road radar.
Leeds United now want Montpellier defender Modibo Sagnan
A report from French outlet Foot Mercato say Leeds are ‘closely interested’ in a deal to sign Modibo Sagnan from Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier. A left-footed centre-back with seven caps for his nation, Mali.
Joining Montpellier in January 2024 for a fee of £2.75m, Sagnan has gone on to play 39 times for Montpellier. This season, he’s played in 25 of Montpellier’s 28 Ligue 1 games and started 23 times.
Montpellier are set for relegation, sitting rock-bottom of Ligue 1 and 12 points adrift of safety with 10 games to play, Sagnan is set to move ‘quickly’ and Leeds are leading the charge for the African ace.
Potential replacement for Pascal Struijk ahead of summer…
Given that Sagnan is a left-footed centre-back, it seems that Leeds are planning to sign a player that can replace Pascal Struijk or Max Wober. Vice captain Struijk has been touted with a move to PSV Eindhoven.
Wober meanwhile, is expected to leave Leeds. The Whites, regardless of the division they find themselves in, could need left-footed centre-backs and Sagnan has been targeted – but, there are question marks.
While he has scored five goals in his 39 Montpellier games, he has been a key part of a side really bad in France’s top tier. Leeds are likely to have a list of targets for the Premier League, and the Championship.
Sagnan is a player that should only be considered if Leeds remain in England’s second tier. But a move should be easy to do given Sagnan is likely to leave with Montpellier set for relegation to Ligue 2.
