Already in this January transfer window, it looks like Leeds United might struggle to land some of their reported targets, with Premier League clubs coming in and making their presence known.
It’s often impossible for Championship clubs to compete with Premier League clubs in the transfer market. Even for Leeds United who have their share of resources, as well as a big pulling power despite being in and out of the top flight.
A recent example is Abdukodir Khusanov. It’s been reported that Leeds have tabled a bid for Khusanov, though Leeds are all but out of the race for the RC Lens man’s signature with Manchester City now showing an interest in the centre-back.
It might be the first of many similar stories for Leeds in this January transfer window. But it won’t deter Leeds United from making moves for some exciting new names in the January transfer window.
Leeds United handed Ben Godfrey transfer update
One potentially exciting signing that the Whites could make in January is the loan signing of Atalanta centre-back Ben Godfrey. It’s been claimed that Leeds want to sign Godfrey on loan with the former Everton man featuring just once in Serie A since his £10million Goodison Park exit in the summer.
Leeds are clearly keen on signing a centre-back with Khusanov and Godfrey both linked, as well as names like Andrew Omobamidele at Nottingham Forest, and Nico Elvedi who plays for Daniel Farke’s former club Borussia Monchengladbach.
Now though, it looks like Leeds have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Godfrey with journalist Rudy Galetti claiming that Tottenham have actually ‘shown the most interest’ in signing the 26-year-old in January.
Galetti posted on X: “Tottenham have shown the most interest in Ben Godfrey, as they consider the Atalanta player among the possible reinforcements for the defence. Wolves, who are also looking for a CB, have also asked for updated information on him.”
Why Ben Godfrey update could be good news for Leeds United
For Leeds, Godfrey is just one of many centre-backs linked right now. But this emerging Spurs interest could actually be good news for the Whites.
Ahead of January, Tottenham were linked with Pascal Struijk. It’s also been reported that Spurs are desperate to sign a new centre-back in January, like Leeds.
So Spurs turning their attention to Godfrey could mean them turning their attention away from Struijk, leaving him at Leeds for at least the remainder of the campaign.
For Farke, it may just be a case of moving on from Godfrey and honing in on another centre-back target.
