Josuha Guilavogui’s interesting Leeds United transfer prediction literally came true

The January transfer window ended with Leeds United’s fans left underwhelmed as the club failed to sign a new striker, or bring in competition for Brenden Aaronson in the no.10 role.

Cameron Archer remains at Southampton and so does Adam Armstrong, at least for the time being. He is waiting to find out if a loan move to West Brom has gone through, though a deal is awaiting clearance.

One interesting bit of news that did emerge from the January window was a bid made for Mateo Joseph. Real Betis offered Leeds a fee of £10m for Joseph, but Leeds chose to reject the offer for the Spaniard.

It was claimed that Joseph was open to the move but Betis’ first choice was always Cucho Hernandez. He completed a move to Betis from MLS side Columbus Crew, signing on for a fee said to be about £12m.

Josuha Guilavogui actually predicted bids for Mateo Joseph

Speaking back in November, Guilavogui said how he had been speaking to Joseph. French midfielder Guilavogui said he told Joseph that bids for his services would arrive if he started taking his chances.

Guilavogui told Leeds Live back in November that he had spoken to Joseph about his form: “I told him ‘Mateo, I know now it’s hard, you start[ed] as our striker and now you are coming in the bench.

“But you had already three chances and if you scored the three chances, maybe you will start the other game or maybe even this winter someone can say we want to buy you for £20m. I hope you will stay.’”

What Jon Newsome said about bids for Mateo Joseph in January

Betis were not the only Spanish side interested in Joseph in January. Joe Donnohue reports that many La Liga clubs were interested in Joseph last month, and that interest is likely to remain come the summer.

Joseph is well-regarded in Spain given his exploits with the Spain U21 side. Real Betis also have a solid relationship with Leeds, given the recent permanent sales of Marc Roca and Diego Llorente from Leeds.

Jon Newsome said there was no chance Leeds would have accepted the bid for Joseph. It was not a case of money, but the lack of time to replace him and the small amount of options Leeds have up front.
