The January transfer window came to an end with Leeds United’s squad largely intact, albeit apart from the senior loan exits of Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Crew early in the month.
Gelhardt joined Hull City on loan and Crew went to League Two side Doncaster Rovers, with both already impressing. Leeds were expected to then go into the market and bring in a new signing here or there.
Daniel Farke made it clear he would like three signings, a no.10, a striker and a centre-back. But the club have failed to do anything in terms of new signings, despite their rivals doing plenty of transfer business.
Sheffield United signed seven new players, while Burnley brought in five. Sunderland reunited manager Regis Le Bris with Enzo Le Fee, and Le Fee’s arrival from Roma left Leeds fans concerned on social media.
Jon Newsome shocked Leeds didn’t rival Burnley for £8m signing
Arguably, the signing of the window at Championship level was done by Burnley. They struck a loan to buy deal for the signing of Marcus Edwards, a player that has impressed in the Champions League.
Jon Newsome told the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast that he was shocked Leeds did not try to sign Edwards, with Scott Parker forming a reunion with Edwards after playing together at Tottenham.
“Burnley, Edwards. Sporting Lisbon, good [attacker], English, was up for a loan. Surprised Leeds didn’t go for him in all honesty, a good option. Wanted to come back to England. Perfect example, the only one.”

Newsome is not the only one to think Edwards would have been a good addition at Elland Road. A player that is naturally a winger but has that vision and technique to play as a no.10, or even as a false nine.
Burnley have significantly improved their chances of automatic promotion with the signing of Edwards. Sky Sports say Burnley’s obligation depends on promotion and will cost The Clarets £8m, a superb deal.
Ross McCormack also thinks Leeds missed a trick with Edwards, describing the talented Spurs product as “special”. The one positive is that Leeds have played Burnley twice and will not need to face Edwards.
