‘I’m with Eddie Gray’… Leeds United fans all weigh in on what should happen with Illan Meslier

With Leeds United finally signing a new goalkeeper, Illan Meslier’s future has been thrown further into doubt.

This comes after Leeds are signing Lucas Perri as their seventh arrival of the summer, with Perri joining in a £15.6m deal.

Meslier will be frustrated that his Leeds career has panned out like this, but after continuous mistakes last season, the Frenchman’s destiny is likely to only head in one direction.

Leeds are not pushing Meslier’s exit as the hierarchy may feel he could still offer something at Elland Road despite a disappointing campaign.

Of course, the consensus still is that the 25-year-old will be sold, but some Leeds fans aren’t in agreement.

Leeds United fans say Illan Meslier should stay

It’s hard to defend the Leeds no.1 after his errors, which actually almost cost Leeds promotion.

But this doesn’t reflect on his entire tenure with the Whites, as Meslier has had some bright moments.

Despite this, most fans suggest that it’s time for a new chapter in Meslier’s career, as after six seasons, he’s had enough chances to prove his worth.

But on the other side of things, Meslier is still fairly young for a keeper, and some Leeds fans have stated on X that he deserves another chance, whether it’s a loan or he has the number two spot.

@Woodhead85 was baffled, saying: “Yes…stupid question. He’s still a top keeper…I don’t get the hate.”

@Scrappydapidoo claimed: “I want him to be the number one.”

@EricLUFCSloane made the point of Perri’s arrival, saying: “Yes he can learn a lot from Perri.”

“Loan him out and if we get relegated keep him as a back up,” @HARRY1970711

@IanFenton: “Defo yes! I’m with Eddie Gray – he’ll be one of the best keepers in the world when he matures over the next five years.”

@lilolis4: “Yes, I think Meslier is a better goalkeeper overall & deserves to be a no.2 if he wants to be.”

What Eddie Gray said about Meslier at Leeds

Of course, Meslier doesn’t want to be a backup, and if the opportunity comes to move on, there is no doubt that the keeper would take it.

But after one fan suggested he agreed with Leeds legend Eddie Gray, what did the iconic figure actually say about the Frenchman?

Gray made a shock prediction about Meslier, but it’s clear some fans actually agree with what he said.

“I think people have been a bit quick to criticise Meslier,” Gray said.

“Goalkeepers don’t mature till 28/29, and I think he’ll become a top goalkeeper.

“He’ll definitely play for France at the top level, he’s got all the attributes.”

It’s certainly a bold claim to say this about Meslier after the season he’s had, but Gray obviously thinks Meslier should have a future in Yorkshire, and the 49ers might reconsider if the Frenchman is happy to remain despite interest in Meslier ‘starting to pick up’.
