‘He’s a player’… Manager says he came ‘very close’ to signing 24-year-old from Leeds United in January

Leeds United were able to shift a few of their fringe players in the January transfer window.

It was a fairly quiet month on the whole at Elland Road with Connor Roberts the only signing Leeds made, and even then, that was not announced until the very final moments of deadline day.

Daniel Farke already boasts one of the strongest squads in the Championship and so more of the focus was placed on shifting some of those who perhaps weren’t getting enough game time.

One player who falls under that category is Ian Poveda, who made the loan switch to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day.

Wednesday were able to beat Birmingham City to his signature and Blues boss Tony Mowbray has revealed just how close they came to signing him, in an interview with the BBC.

Mowbray reveals Poveda talks

He said: “Poveda is a good player, I would have to say. We were very close to signing Poveda in this window just gone. He’s a player I had at Blackburn Rovers and is a very talented young boy.”

Mowbray was actually speaking after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Wednesday on Friday, in which Poveda made his full debut for the Owls.

Poveda very much made Mowbray live to regret not getting a deal over the line ahead of Wednesday, as he provided an assist for the opening goal, while also being named as Sky Sports’ player of the match.

The 24-year-old had not been getting much of a look-in at Leeds amid the plethora of wide options at Farke’s disposal, and so he has already shown what he can do when playing from the start.

Farke says it was Poveda’s decision to push for a move from Leeds and on the evidence of his first match, he has made the right decision, even if there is plenty of work to do to get Wednesday out of relegation trouble.
