Ian Poveda was handed his first start for Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night as Danny Rohl’s side played host to Birmingham City in a crucial relegation clash – and Poveda was key in securing a win.
It comes after the 24-year-old left Leeds on deadline day to join The Owls. A surprise move, and one that also saw Tony Mowbray try to bring the Colombia star to the Blues. Instead, he played against them.
Poveda lasted four years at Elland Road after joining from Manchester City but only played 30 times at senior level. He also went on loan to Blackburn and Blackpool, suffering a broken leg while at the former.
He had been a regular in the matchday squad this season, playing 10 times in all competitions – and being involved in 22 of our 30 Championship games. But, Poveda’s deal was expiring in the summer.
Luke Ayling and Leeds stars react as Ian Poveda shines on debut
It saw Wednesday sign him on loan, with a permanent deal expected – according to Ben Parker. Rohl has already said he’d like to land Poveda beyond his loan spell, with a free transfer on the cards for him.
On Friday, he was handed a first Owls start as they hosted the Blues at Hillsborough. Wednesday picked up a massive win on his birthday, creating an assist for the first of Ike Ugbo’s two goals in a 2-0 win.
Plenty replied to his Instagram post above. Willy Gnonto, Junior Firpo and Rangers star Rabbi Matondo commented – the latter a teammate at City’s academy. Luke Ayling also sent a four-word message.
Junior Firpo’s comment says: “Player! Very happy for you brother”.
