Daniel Farke spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Friday’s clash against Bristol City and the Leeds United boss explained why the Whites have not made any signings this month.
Leeds have waved goodbye to a number of players this month, most notably three defenders in the form of Djed Spence, Luke Ayling and Leo Hjelde yesterday, to Sunderland. A deal that saw Celtic benefit.
Farke admitted before the January window started that he knew he needed a left-back, given Junior Firpo and Sam Byram’s injury issues. Losing Ayling and Spence suggests Leeds need a right-back, too.
But, nothing has been done yet. There were suggestions of a centre-back as well, but Charlie Cresswell now looks set to remain. Farke explained why Leeds have not brought any new signings in, as of yet.
He explains that in January, it is difficult to find players that are available, at an affordable and correct price, and improve what is already a “fantastic” squad. But, he makes it clear that Leeds are looking.
“January is difficult. We are playing a fantastic season so far, it is difficult to improve our squad. We don’t just bring any player in, we have good academy players. If we want a player, it has to be the full package.
“He has to have really good quality, improves us, affordable. Never easy. We will use the last 24 hours to look for this perfect fit. If we don’t, I am not too concerned,” Farke added, as per the club’s YouTube.

It is good to know that Leeds are not just signing players for the sake of signings. Farke wants to do it the right way, only adding a player that improves the side. Not simply, squad players that won’t play.
It is expensive in January because it is the middle of the season and clubs do not want to lose players. But, Leeds might have benefitted from looking to Europe for additions – rather than the Premier League.
