Leeds United are shifting their summer rebuild under Daniel Farke into high gear, and the search for a new long-term anchor between the posts has led straight to the Etihad Stadium.

Reports from David Ornstein, Graham Smyth, and various top-tier outlets confirm that the Whites are in active talks with Manchester City to sign James Trafford.

With Newcastle United stepping back and Trafford leaning firmly toward a move to Elland Road, Leeds United are in pole position to secure their primary goalkeeping target.

While the 23-year-old England international’s pedigree as a goalkeeper with City is clear, it is the glowing endorsement from world-class international team-mate Cole Palmer that highlights the rare ceiling Leeds United would be buying into.

Leeds are closing in on a deal for James Trafford! What is your instant reaction! 👀😍

How much would you pay for him?

Who is Leeds United No.1 target, James Trafford?

Trafford’s path to elite English football is far from standard. Born into a Cumbrian farming family, where he famously had to explain the offside rule to his folks and learned to drive on a tractor before ever getting behind the wheel of a car, his upbringing gave him a grounded, workhorse mentality.

When Trafford arrived at City’s academy from Carlisle at age 12, his quiet confidence and raw athletic ceiling immediately made waves among his peers.

Few players know Trafford’s mental strength and shot-stopping ability better than Palmer, who came through City and England’s age-group ranks alongside the goalkeeper.

Recalling their academy days, the Chelsea star left no doubt about just how highly Trafford was rated by those facing him every day in training.

“Wow. He’s so good”, Palmer was quoted as saying by the BBC in 2023. “You could see it in the academy. Even in training, he’s so hard to score past. I’m just glad everyone else is seeing it.

“He knows himself how good he is, but he’s not arrogant. He’s a nice lad. He’s a normal lad who believes in himself.

“When he first came, everyone was thinking, ‘who’s this kid?’ As time went on, everyone was looking at each other, like ‘wow’.

“He just goes about his business on his own. I always say to him – even when we were little – that he is going to be world-class.”

Trafford would be statement signing for Elland Road

Following senior departures in the goalkeeping department, landing Trafford would not just solve an immediate positional need for Farke; it would deliver a goalkeeper with genuine World Cup credentials and elite self-belief.

If Palmer’s long-standing assessment holds true, bringing Trafford to West Yorkshire could prove to be one of the shrewdest transfer moves 49ers Enterprises complete all summer.

It remains to be seen how much Manchester City will demand for the goalkeeper‘s sale, however.

It is worth noting that City sold Trafford to Burnley for £19million in 2023, before buying him back for £27million last year, so he will not be cheap.
