Dressing room snub and snake emojis: Why Karl Darlow’s Leeds United farewell backfired

Karl Darlow has officially crossed the Pennines to sign for Manchester United, breaking one of football’s ultimate taboos and sparking an immediate, cold-shouldered reaction from Leeds United fans and players alike.

Leaving Elland Road for Old Trafford is one of the most highly controversial journeys a player can make in English football.

While the legendary tales of Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand, and Alan Smith brought sheer fury, Darlow’s departure as a veteran squad player was expected to sting rather than scar.

However, his attempts to make a class, heartfelt exit on social media have instantly backfired completely, exposing a telling rift and leaving him exposed to the raw wrath of the Leeds United faithful.

The Instagram farewell met with ‘snake’ and ‘rat’ emojis

Following the confirmation of his move to Manchester United on a free transfer, Darlow took to Instagram to share a video of his time in West Yorkshire, accompanied by a warm, grateful caption thanking the fans and club.

The response was swift, brutal, and entirely uncompromising. Rather than receiving warm well-wishes, the veteran’s comments section was instantly bombarded with hundreds of snake and rat emojis from Leeds United supporters who feel deeply betrayed by his choice of destination.

For a fanbase that prides itself on loyalty, seeing an active player turn down a contract extension, directly delaying Leeds’ own summer goalkeeper recruitment plans in the process, only to sign for their arch-rivals is a bitter pill to swallow.

The telling radio silence from the Leeds United dressing room

While the hostile fan reaction on social media was entirely predictable, the response – or lack thereof – from his former teammates is perhaps the most damning aspect of the fallout.

Leeds United boast a famously tight-knit squad, containing a heavy Welsh contingent. Under any normal circumstances, you would expect a popular veteran Wales international like Darlow to be showered with supportive comments from close friends in the team.

Instead, there has been total radio silence:

The collective decision to avoid associating with the post speaks volumes. The players understand the gravity of the rivalry, and nobody is willing to compromise their standing with the Elland Road crowd by publicly backing a move to Manchester.

A warm Old Trafford welcome in contrast

As the bridge back to Leeds United burns to ashes, Darlow’s new reality is starting to take shape in Manchester.

In stark contrast to the icy cold shoulder he has received in West Yorkshire, his new teammates have lost no time welcoming him.

Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes showed his delight at the signing, posting a public “welcome” message under Darlow’s official Manchester United announcement.

While Darlow will act as experienced, low-risk cover behind Senne Lammens under Michael Carrick, he has quickly realised that crossing the divide comes at a high cost.

He may have secured a dream move to Old Trafford, but he has permanently scorched his legacy at Elland Road to get there.
