Bundesliga manager seriously considering a U-turn over signing Leeds United player

Leeds United could be set to suffer a fresh blow in the transfer market after a report in Germany cast doubt over the sale of Isaac Schmidt.

Isaac Schmidt is one of the players who looks set to leave Leeds this summer, after finding himself on the periphery of the squad under Daniel Farke.

The arrival of James Justin has pushed Schmidt further down the pecking order at Leeds, meaning he is likely to bring his time at Elland Road to an end.

Schmidt has been persistently linked with a move to Werder Bremen this summer, but a delay to Justin’s arrival at the club has now thrown the move into doubt after Bremen swooped to sign Yukinari Sugawara from Southampton.

This deal has thrown their move for Schmidt into doubt as Leeds risk missing out on the £3 million transfer fee they were looking to recoup on the defender.

Leeds United risk collapse of Isaac Schmidt deal

According to a report in the German publication Bild, Bremen could now pull out of the deal to sign Schmidt, as they reconsider their priorities in the transfer market.

Bild states that the saving grace for Leeds could be Bremen’s ongoing doubts over the fitness of Max Wober, who is currently sidelined through injury.

The report states: “Are Werder tired of Schmidt? Internally, there is discussion about whether Bremen already consider themselves sufficiently well-positioned on the wing thanks to the signing of Sugawara.

“Manager Clemens Fritz told BILD: ‘We are in the process of deciding whether or not to add anything to that position.’

“Especially since they are urgently looking for a number one centre forward. Much depends on Maximilian Wöber (27), who will be out for a few more weeks but should be available again by mid-October at the latest. It is questionable how much Bremen can rely on the injury-prone Austrian.”

Sheffield Wednesday game shows Schmidt is not in Daniel Farke’s plans

Although Farke made nine changes to the side that suffered a heavy defeat against Arsenal for Leeds’ trip to Hillsborough, Schmidt was not included as he nears the exit with Leeds.

Farke elected to name Jack Harrison at left-back rather than the Swiss defender, and this confirms that Schmidt has no future at Elland Road.

As a result, Farke will be desperate for his move to Bremen to go through; otherwise, the Leeds boss risks carrying an unhappy player until the transfer window re-opens in January.

Leeds’ priority in the final days of the window has to be on bringing in the attacking players Farke so desperately needs. The need to find a new home for Schmidt would be an unwelcome distraction.
