Borussia Dortmund officials internally believe they made a mistake by letting Julian Brandt leave the club, as Leeds United explore a sensational move for the free agent.

The 30-year-old midfielder officially became a free agent at the end of last month after failing to agree to a contract extension at the Westfalenstadion.

While Brandt continues to search for his next destination, his former employers are reportedly suffering a major case of transfer regret behind closed doors.

Boardroom regret at Borussia Dortmund

Speaking on Sky Deutschland’s Auffe Sud podcast, prominent journalist Patrick Berger revealed that there is a growing, uneasy feeling among some Borussia Dortmund officials that they made a total blunder letting Brandt walk out the door.

Dortmund announced in March that the Germany international would depart at the end of his contract after renewal talks proved unsuccessful.

However, as the Bundesliga giants continue their hunt for a creative replacement in the transfer market, members of the hierarchy are beginning to point fingers.

The internal consensus among some key decision-makers is that it would have been much wiser to keep the experienced midfielder for one more season rather than letting him go for nothing.

Despite the sudden boardroom drama and second thoughts, a return to Dortmund is completely out of the question.

Both parties have moved on, leaving the Bundesliga heavyweights to stew on their own regret.

Leeds United explore ambitious free transfer

Dortmund’s pain could very well be Leeds United’s gain. The Whites are currently exploring an ambitious swoop to land the highly decorated Germany international.

While no concrete talks are understood to have been held between the club and Brandt, Daniel Farke is highly keen on securing the elite playmaker to bolster his midfield creativity for the upcoming Premier League season.

However, Leeds face stiff competition. Brandt’s representatives were recently spotted at the Real Betis headquarters in Spain.

The attacker has already been offered to the La Liga side, but, fortunately for the Whites, they are not considering a move as things stand.

While Brandt remains without a club for the time being, the scramble for his services is escalating.

For 49ers Enterprises, pulling off an ambitious coup of Brandt’s pedigree would represent a massive statement of intent, and Dortmund’s sudden internal conflict shows exactly why he remains such a coveted asset.
