Beren Cross responds when asked if Leeds United are open to selling Willy Gnonto in January

If Robbie Evans is correct, Leeds United will have to sell a player or two in the January transfer window to be able to make a couple of signings of their own.

Managing director Evans said that a new signing would push Leeds over the PSR line, and that could risk a points deduction. But reports have since said that Leeds have between £20m and £25m to spend.

Should Leeds follow Nottingham Forest’s path and risk a points deduction? 💸

“This summer, we spent everything we could. Unequivocally, we are maxing PSR out this season. If we had gone on to other targets [on deadline day], the consequences would have been seen in the current roster. More key players from last season would have had to go.”

If Leeds do need to sell a player to improve their PSR position, then they will have to cash in on a player where they can make some profit. Any fee for Illan Meslier or Jack Harrison would likely be a PSR profit.

Leeds have no intention to sell Harry Gray even though, rated at £40m, which would secure a huge profit. In the summer, Leeds identified Willy Gnonto and Pascal Struijk as sales that will boost the PSR position.

Beren Cross says if Leeds United will sell Willy Gnonto

Italy international Gnonto is struggling to start for Leeds. The 22-year-old has started one Premier League game since the 0-0 draw against Newcastle; hooked at half-time during the 3-2 defeat to Man City.

Reports have claimed that Leeds are willing to listen to offers for Gnonto, given he will allow Leeds to go and make a few signings. Leeds only spent £3.8m to buy him, so it is likely to be a big profit if he is sold.

If we get offered £10m or more for Gnonto we have to sell, right? 🇮🇹

That money can be used on someone better suited to the 3-5-2 formation… 💰

Speaking on The Square Ball, The Athletic’s Beren Cross said: “I’ve not heard anything about Gnonto. But looking at it squad-wise and based on what Farke said, there might be wriggle room for one or two to go.

“Especially your Gnonto’s off this world, that might be too close for comfort. Extremely peripheral names who really aren’t getting a kick at all, they would be more likely to go,” Cross said about Leeds’ Gnonto.

The clubs interested in signing Willy Gnonto this month

Despite Gnonto’s potential and already playing in the Premier League regularly for Leeds before the start of the season, the Italy international has failed to earn much interest in his signature this month.

The only club linked with signing Gnonto so far have been struggling Fiorentina. But La Viola have since brought in Manor Solomon on loan from Tottenham, after his spell at Villarreal had not gone to plan.

Fiorentina are unlikely to be interested in Gnonto now, that they have signed Solomon. Gnonto may prefer to remain at Leeds than go to Fiorentina, with relegation looking more likely for the Italian club.
