Leeds United have a big summer transfer window ahead regardless of whether they win promotion.
The Whites are currently well placed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League as they sit second in the table on 79 points from 37 matches, though given the standard of the top four, there is plenty of work to do.
Leeds are already said to have decided that the first team players who left on loan last summer have no way back, while failure to be promoted would likely lead to the sale of others in order to comply with profit and sustainability rules.
On the other hand, should Leeds get the job done, the squad would be in need of strengthening and a far more exciting summer would be on the cards.
One position which is likely to require an upgrade is left-back, and according to the Athletic, current first choice Junior Firpo is ‘unlikely’ to be offered a new contract, which would increase that need.
Firpo unlikely to be offered new deal
Firpo will have just one year left on his deal at the end of the season and if no renewal is on the table, this summer will represent their last chance to get a fee for him.
The 27-year-old, for arguably the first team in his Leeds career, has established himself as a key player in the last few months, registering five assists, and starting all but two of 13 league matches in 2024.
Following relegation last season, it had looked likely Firpo would leave. However, both a long-term injury and Farke’s intervention put a stop to that.
Firpo, though, found life very tough in the Premier League and it is unlikely Leeds will make that same mistake again of placing too much trust in him. There have already been links to Luca Netz.
On the other hand, it is difficult to see Firpo wanting to do another year in the Championship if Leeds fail to win promotion, and so an amicable parting of ways on the back of a strong individual season, seems the best option.
