Leeds United look as though they have missed out on a key target in the form of Norwich City star Jonathan Rowe after an update on the attacker on Wednesday afternoon.

Rowe, 21, emerged as an option for Leeds this summer as The Whites look to bring in replacements for the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, with the England U21 star shining last season.

Indeed, Rowe scored an impressive 12 Championship goals from a number of different positions for the Canaries after breaking into the Norwich side. Leeds tried an initial £7m bid for Rowe, which was rejected.

However, it quickly became apparent that Leeds were not the only side in the mix to land Rowe before the deadline. Marseille have spent big this summer including the controversial Mason Greenwood.

Marseille close in on Norwich star Rowe after big fee agreed

With Marseille offering top-tier football and looking to break into European football this season, it became obvious that Rowe might prefer to move to France over a move to Leeds this summer.

Now, an update on Wednesday afternoon In the form of Rowe’s move to Marseille. The Telegraph’s John Percy has said that Marseille and Norwich have agreed a £17m fee for Rowe, including a £14m initial fee.

Percy reported on X: “Norwich and Marseille agree £14m deal for Jonathan Rowe, who is set to fly out for medical later today. Further £3m in bonuses and sell-on agreed.”

Marseille withstand Leeds interest and late Rennes move for Rowe

On Tuesday night, it was even claimed that Glen Kamara’s new side Rennes had made a late approach to sign Rowe. However, nothing has come of that with Rowe set to fly off to France today for a medical.

It is a signal of intent from Marseille, but there is also a significant element of whether Marseille might have overpaid to sign Rowe. No doubt a talent, but is he worth the potential £17m fee Marseille may pay?

Leeds will be tasked with looking at other targets like Jack Clarke, Manuel Benson and plenty of other names linked with a move to Elland Road in the last few days as the Rowe ship looks to have sailed
