Leeds United, Sheffield United, and Burnley look set to take the race for automatic promotion down to the wire. At least one team will miss out.
Whilst Sunderland in 4th place of the Championship table are only six points behind Burnley in 3rd, it’s certainly looking like the current top three of Leeds United, Sheffield United, and Burnley are the main candidates for automatic promotion this season.
Right now though it’s Leeds who lead the pack after their much-needed 2-0 win over Millwall in the week. The win lifted them back into 1st after Sheffield United briefly took the top spot with their 1-1 draw against Bristol City midweek.
| 1 | Leeds | 37 | 23 | 10 | 4 | 74 | 23 | 51 | 79 |
| 2 | Sheffield Utd | 37 | 24 | 7 | 6 | 52 | 28 | 24 | 77 |

| 4 | Sunderland | 37 | 19 | 12 | 6 | 55 | 34 | 21 | 69 |
Leeds have already beaten the Blades twice this season. Against Scott Parker’s Burley though, the case was different. Burnley beat Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road back in September before a goalless draw at Turf Moor in the reverse fixture in January.
The Clarets have proved tricky customers this season. And come the summer, they and Daniel Farke’s Leeds could end up battling to sign the same player: Marcus Edwards.

Marcus Edwards was open to Leeds United move, he’s now set for summer exit
Burnley fended off strong competition to sign Edwards on loan from Sporting CP in January. The signing impressed many, whilst Leeds fans watched their side go the entirety of the window without a first-team signing. Former Spurs man Edwards has since scored once and assisted once in six Championship outings for the Clarets.
More recently, it was revealed that Edwards was opening to joining Leeds United, Sunderland or Burnley in January. And it’s now been revealed in Portugal that Sporting CP don’t want him back. Portuguese outlet Record (as reported via Sport Witness) say that Edwards is not expected to return to Portugal in the summer, and will instead seal a permanent exit.
Burnley have a £10million obligation to buy the 26-year-old should they earn promotion. For Leeds then, if they were to take an interest in the winger, it would first depend on Burnley missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

Marcus Edwards’ impressive stats for Sporting CP
A right winger, Edwards has made his name outside of England after starting out as a youngster at Spurs.
In 120 total appearances with Sporting CP he scored 24 goals and assisted 26 more, winning the Primeira Liga with the Portuguese giants in the 2023/24 season.
Sporting snapped him up from Portuguese rivals Vitoria Guimaraes in a deal worth around £6.5million in January 2022. With Guimaraes the winger had scored 20 goals and assisted 14 more in 96 total games.
If he can shine with Burnley in the final weeks of the season, and if Burnley eventually do miss out on promotion this season, then there could be a lot of interest in his services for sure.
