Leeds United enjoyed a rare success against Brentford in 2019 as loan striker Eddie Nketiah made his mark for the club in a dramatic late win

Daniel Farke is looking to buck Leeds’ poor recent track record against Brentford when his Leeds side travel to London in the Premier League.

Leeds last won in the capital at the end of the 2021/22 season, when Raphinha scored a decisive goal to help his side secure their top flight status under Jesse Marsch.

However, that is a notable exception in Leeds’ recent form against the Bees, as they look to follow up positive results against Chelsea and Liverpool.

One of Leeds’ most recent victories came in 2019 under Marcelo Bielsa, as Eddie Nketiah scored a decisive goal on his Championship debut to seal a 1-0 win.

Daniel Farke’s job is safe for now, can he get a result against Brentford? 🔮

Eddie Nketiah scored crucial Leeds United goal v Brentford

Brentford were one of Leeds’ main rivals in the 2019/20 season, as the Whites looked to put right their failure to secure promotion from the Championship the previous year.

Young Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah was one of the new additions brought to West Yorkshire that summer, but was made to wait for his league debut for the club, with Patrick Bamford being preferred in the opening weeks of the season.

However, Bamford missed with a good chance in the first half, as the game drifted into the closing stages with the score locked at 0-0.

Nketiah was eventually introduced midway through the second half and was in the right place to provide the game’s decisive moment with 81 minutes on the clock.

Did Leeds miss their chance with Eddie Nketiah? 🤔

Helder Costa produced a typical driving run down the right, getting to the byline before cutting back to Nketiah, who scored the simplest of goals from four yards out.

Sadly, Nketiah never had the chance to fulfil his undoubted potential at Elland Road, as his loan was cut short due to a lack of playing time. But he showed his poacher’s instinct on his Championship debut to give the Whites a much-needed win.

Leeds United’s record against Brentford since 2009

Leeds and Brentford did not face each other in a competitive fixture for nearly 50 years between 1961 and 2009, before a flurry of games between the two sides in recent years.

While there have been some notable successes for Leeds in that time, on the whole, Jesse Marsch’s 2022 meltdown against the Bees is more representative of the Whites’ recent history in the fixture.

The two sides have met 18 times since their first meeting of the 21st century in 2009, and Leeds have tasted victory on just four occasions. Brentford have secured six wins in that time, with eight meetings ending in a draw, according to 11v11.

On the plus side for Leeds, Brentford have only ever managed one Premier League win against Leeds, with the last meeting ending in a 0-0 stalemate at Elland Road in January 2023.
