Uruguay fans have shared their reaction after former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa gave a dramatic press conference overnight.

Marcelo Bielsa has faced scrutiny over his future with Uruguay, which threw his hopes of leading them to the World Cup into question.

However, Bielsa ended all speculation over his future by declaring his intent to guide Uruguay to the World Cup, despite reports of unrest in the dressing room stemming from the omission of Luis Suarez.

Bielsa’s declaration also ends the outside chances of the legendary former Leeds manager returning to Elland Road, while speculation continues to swirl around the future of Daniel Farke.

Now, in the aftermath of Bielsa’s unscheduled press conference, Uruguay fans have united behind the former Leeds boss, criticising the players and media for their bias against him.

Uruguay fans unite behind former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Posting on the social media site X (formerly Twitter), Uruguay fans were quick to unite behind their manager after he was forced to defend his position.

One fan took aim at what they perceive to be “biased journalism”, stating: “He made us play soccer like never before, defended his players to the hilt when they clashed with the Colombians.

“Never gave in to this country’s biased journalism, clearly something broke, and none of what’s happening is 100% Marcelo Bielsa’s responsibility.”

Another fan described Bielsa as a “phenomenon”, as they posted: “You ask a spicy question to the Madman Bielsa and he subtly crushes you with the response. A phenomenon.”

Bielsa was urged to hang onto his position by one fan, despite the criticism, as they argued: “Hang in there, Bielsa. These stubborn Uruguayans don’t understand you.”

While one fan argued that Bielsa would not be out of place lecturing in a top university, as they wrote: “Bielsa never caught my eye in terms of football, but yes, the idea of him as a character.

“Meaning, as a character who could speak at any top university in the world (in fact, he already did at Oxford and Cambridge).”

What is Marcelo Bielsa’s record with Uruguay?

With Bielsa’s future seemingly settled, in the short-term at least, the former Leeds boss can now get back to focusing on steering his side to the World Cup.

Overall, Bielsa has a positive record during his time with Uruguay, having led them to a third-place finish at the Copa America and achieving World Cup qualification at a canter.

“If I have to remember Suarez, I remember him not for what he said about me, but for what he contributed to the Copa America,” Bielsa said.

“This incident highlights two things: you can complain, you can make accusations, you can do it publicly, and you can avoid the path we all choose.

“If there are disputes at home, don’t open the window for others to see how we fight. This applies to our homes, and it applies to the national team.”

Marcelo Bielsa on the Luis Suarez fall-out

Since taking over as Uruguay coach in 2023, Bielsa has overseen 16 wins from 31 matches, with eight draws and just seven losses, including the recent heavy defeat against the USA.

Uruguay have won two World Cups, in 1930 and 1950, and achieved two fourth-place finishes in 1970 and 2010. With his future now resolved, Bielsa can get back to the challenge of improving on those results.
