Leeds United have failed to properly fill the void at left-back permanently for a number of years, since the departure of Charlie Taylor. Junior Firpo is currently first choice on the left.

But Firpo’s time at Leeds has been up and down. The Dominican Republic international’s form for Leeds has coincided with numerous injuries, struggling in his first two years with Leeds in the Premier League.

Relegation to the Championship has helped Firpo, but it took some time for Firpo to come into the side during Daniel Farke’s first season and now, the former Barcelona man is out of contract in the summer.

Even if Leeds get promoted, Firpo may not sign a new deal. Real Betis are leading the race for Firpo but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new side Besiktas also want Firpo with non-English clubs able to approach him.

Leeds need a left-back and one that is not going to break the bank given they will be losing the man they are replacing likely, on a free. Josh Doig is currently playing in Italian football with second-string Sassuolo.

Doig completed a move to Verona from Hibernian in July 2022 and after six goals in 36 games, Sassuolo struck a £4.5m deal in January. But since then Sassuolo has been relegated, and Doig has stayed put.

Back in January 2024, Leeds wanted to sign Doig before he joined Sassuolo. Aggressive defensively, he is superb going forward given his eight involvements in 50 Serie A games and Leeds should look again.

That form has continued in Serie B with Sassuolo sitting top of Italy’s second tier and on Sunday, the Italian outfit beat Sudtirol 5-3 and Doig scored the pick of the goals, smashing one in from 25 yards.

Serie B is beneath Doig and while he is playing Italy’s second tier, he is doing it alongside some big names in a Sassuolo side that also includes Italy international Domenico Berardi. They are set to go up.

But a return to the United Kingdom is likely to be a temptation for Doig. Especially, given Doig was once compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by former teammate Lewis Stevenson while still at Scottish side Hibernian.

Leeds need a left-back and clearly like Doig, who is capable of producing something out of nothing in attack. If Leeds are keeping tabs, then they will have been impressed on Sunday should look at a move.
