Leeds United now want to sign player who was once compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by former teammate

The January transfer window is now open and Leeds United will be exploring the market for potential new additions.

The Whites could do with a couple of signings in order to strengthen the squad, with it also possible that some players could also be going the other way, including those on the fringes such as Charlie Cresswell.

The positions that look most in need of strengthening are left-back and number 10, with Daniel Farke having already previously suggested that it is on his agenda.

Sam Byram also picked up yet another injury yesterday and while Junior Firpo provided two assists from the bench, he has also struggled with his fitness this season.

One potential option for Leeds could be Hellas Verona’s Scottish left-back Josh Doig, who along with Rangers and AC Monza, has been linked with a move to Elland Road in recent days.

Doig compared to Cristiano Ronaldo

Before making the switch to Serie A, Doig was at Hibernian where he played alongside Lewis Stevenson. Doig was regarded as a top talent at the Scottish side, and was even likened to Cristiano Ronaldo by his former teammate, via Football Scotland.

He said: “Josh has potential to go to the top level. He is 6ft 3in, fast, strong. Even just looking at him with his top off – without meaning to sound creepy – he looks like Ronaldo, with that kind of physique.

“He just is an athlete and that is half the battle nowadays. Everyone here wishes him all the best. It’s nothing to do with me. He has done it all himself. He has been brilliant to work with. Look, I’ve given him little pointers here and there but he has done the hard work himself.

“I don’t think I have seen a better natural athlete than him and that stands him in good stead. He is a great boy and someone I would love to see go on and do well.”

Doig already has well over 100 senior appearances under his belt at the age of just 21 and at 6ft 3, is clearly very strong physically.

Given both Byram and Firpo’s struggles so far this season with injuries, Leeds are going to need someone like Doig who can provide some reliability in terms of their fitness.
