Leeds United rivalling Rangers and more in race for £5.2million left-back

Leeds United have been linked with this £5.2million full-back as we enter the January transfer window.

Leeds United look like they’ll make some signings in this month’s transfer window, as Daniel Farke‘s side remain inconsistent in the Championship.

The Whites have won just one of their last five in the Championship, losing their last two to now find themselves in 4th place of the table and nine points behind Ipswich Town in 2nd.

And with the winter transfer window now open, Leeds have been linked with a potential new signing in Hellas Verona full-back Josh Doig.

Who is Josh Doig?

Doig, 21, hails from Scotland and began his playing career with Queen’s Park, before making his name with Hibernian.

Then in 2022 he left his native Scotland for Italy, signing for Hellas Verona who currently sit in 17th place of the Serie A table.

Doig featured 22 times in the league last season and has 10 league appearances to his name already this season, starting in games against the likes if Juventus and Napoli whilst also being named in the Scotland squad for just the second time in the November international break.

What’s been said about Josh Doig to Leeds United?

The trusted Torino fan page Toro Goal revealed yesterday that Hellas’ Serie A rivals Torino have opened talks over a possible €6million move for Doig (£5.2million), but that there’s also been contact from Monza, Rangers, and Leeds United.

It’s added that Doig’s representatives are working hard on a possible January transfer.

A good potential coup for Daniel Farke?

Doig is a left-back and that’s a position which Leeds United are currently very light on, with Junior Firpo the only fit and recognised left-back currently available to Farke.

So this looks like a position that Leeds could potentially look to bolster next moth and Doig seems like he fits the profile; he’s young and has good experience having played in Serie A, with videos showcasing his abilities as an attacking-minded full-back.

Doig loves to get up the pitch, cross into the box and beat players with the ball, but he also does the basics of defending very well and so he seems like a very well-rounded player; former Hibs boss Lee Johnson described Doig as a ‘powerhouse’.

However, a deal for Doig doesn’t appear straightforward, and for a number of reasons.

Hellas paid £3million for him in 2022 and so he won’t come cheap, with this apparent £5.2milion fee looking like a potential starting point.

And with so many teams interested and having already made contact, we could quickly see the fee for Doig rise and a bidding war commence.

He’s also under contract until 2026 and so Hellas are under no immediate pressure to sell, so the ball is very much in their court right now.

Leeds will have done their due diligence on Doig and his playing style seems to fit the playing style at Elland Road under Farke, so if Leeds can get this one over the line, it could prove to be a very shrewd move.
