‘Jesse Marsch back’ – Leeds United fans can’t believe what Daniel Farke said after Arsenal loss

Leeds United fans have questioned Daniel Farke’s assessment of their defeat against Arsenal, drawing parallels with former head coach Jesse Marsch.

Daniel Farke was forced to watch on as his Leeds United side were brought back down to earth with a bump following their opening round Premier League victory over Everton.

In a performance which “hurt” former Leeds player Jermaine Beckford, Farke’s side were second-best in every aspect of the game as the isolated Joel Piroe was the living embodiment of his team’s abject performance.

Farke was critical of his Leeds defence at full-time, after Jurrien Timber scored two goals from corners as fans criticised goalkeeper Lucas Perri for his role in the loss.

However, Leeds supporters have now turned their ire towards the head coach himself, after his post-match comments drew comparisons with his divisive predecessor Jesse Marsch.

Leeds United fans criticise Daniel Farke’s post-match comments

Farke’s initial post-match reaction was relayed to fans on the social media site X (formerly Twitter) by The Athletic journalist Beren Cross, as the Leeds boss claimed that he “liked our mentality at 4-0 down”.

This comment prompted a furious reaction from Leeds fans, who compared Farke’s comments to the notoriously positive post-match assessments that Marsch regularly gave as Leeds slipped towards relegation.

One angry fan posted: “It’s not that we lost. We all expected that. It’s the manner of the defeat. Our players just collapsed.

“The defence was all over the place, letting them run through them. Perri was shockingly bad. We were overawed & far too slow. Constantly giving the ball away with poor passing”

One fan predicted that Leeds were in for a long season, stating: “This game did define Leeds – going to be one hell of a struggle to stay up.”

Another fan questioned Farke’s assertion that Leeds did not allow Arsenal to make more chances at 4-0 down, arguing: “At 4-0 down, we didn’t allow them chances… Apart from when we did and gave a penalty away.”

Lukas Nmecha was introduced from the bench after an hour, and one fan demanded that he start Leeds’ next game as one of several changes, writing: “Clutching! Needs Dominic Calvert-Lewin, or Nmecha, Noah Okafor, Jaka Bijol, Sean Longstaff on from the start next game.”

Another fan claimed that Farke’s comments had set alarms ringing, arguing: “Watching his post-match interview was awful. Alarm bells ringing, if Forest sack Nuno, it’s an easy decision to make for the 49ers.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be one of several Leeds cup debutants

Mercifully for Farke, Leeds have the opportunity to quickly put their defeat against Arsenal behind them, as they prepare to kick off their Carabao Cup campaign.

Leeds make the short trip down the M1 to Hillsborough to face the financially-stricken Sheffield Wednesday, and Farke may be tempted to make several changes to his squad.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is an obvious candidate to bring into the Leeds squad, having been made to wait for his debut after signing on a free transfer.

Farke could also introduce centre-back Jaka Bijol, who missed Leeds’ first game of the season through suspension. He could partner Sebastiaan Bornauw in the heart of the defence as Farke looks to address the shortcomings which cost Leeds at the Emirates.
