Leeds United were hammered by Arsenal in their opening away game of the season, losing 5-0 in the end.

Leeds United headed to North London in high hopes after their opening day win over Everton at Elland Road, but Daniel Farke’s side were dealt a reality check, losing 5-0 to a dominant Arsenal side in the end.

Goals came from Jurrien Timber and Bukayo Saka in the first half, before Viktor Gyokeres got off the mark in an Arsenal shirt in the second half, with Timber then adding a fourth for Mikel Arteta’s side, and Gyokeres scoring the fifth from the spot in the last minute.

Lucas Perri struggles in Arsenal 4-0 Leeds United

Lucas Perri is the new number one at Leeds United. The Brazilian joined from Lyon for around £15million earlier in the summer, replacing Illan Meslier who had a shocker 2024-25 season.

And whilst Perri looked steady in his debut against Everton, albeit without having much to do, many Leeds United fans were left questioning the goalkeeper’s contributions during the game against Arsenal. The second goal many believe that the Leeds stopper should have saved.

Leeds United fans critical of Lucas Perri after Arsenal defeat

After Meslier’s many howlers last season, Leeds United fans simply want a goalkeeper who’s assured. But many on social media have already compared Perri to Meslier.

One Leeds United fan wrote: “Can somebody please tell me why we replaced Meslier with Perri?” Another supporter added: “Perri cannot play out from the back. He is useless. I’d take Meslier back for sure.

Other comments included: “Perri isn’t much of an upgrade on Meslier, is he?” Whilst another fan wrote: “Meslier actually intuitively brighter and quicker thinking.”

Meanwhile, this Leeds United fan added: “What is Perri doing for that goal by the way? Echoes of Meslier in that one,” in reference to Arsenal’s second goal.

Leeds return to action on Tuesday night with a Carabao Cup clash against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
