Leeds United have made a transfer enquiry for AC Milan’s American midfielder Yunus Musah, sparking immediate, nostalgic comparisons to a prominent past era at Elland Road.
As the Whites look to bolster their options in midfield under Daniel Farke ahead of the upcoming league season, the pursuit of the 23-year-old USMNT international has come as a surprise.
With Italian outlet Milan News confirming that Leeds United have made contact, the tactical and national profile of the player makes it almost impossible not to look back at one of the club’s most debated recent chapters.

Leeds United trigger Jesse Marsch flashbacks
If Leeds United do push ahead with a deal for Musah, fans will be forgiven for thinking Jesse Marsch is back at the helm.
During his tenure, Marsch famously built a heavy USMNT contingent in West Yorkshire, bringing in the likes of Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson and Weston McKennie.
Pursuing Musah – another highly dynamic, direct USMNT star – instantly revives that recruitment blueprint.

But the similarities run much deeper than a passport. Musah’s unique physical profile is almost the textbook definition of a Marsch-system midfielder:
- Musah is a physical powerhouse who excels at picking up the ball in deep, central areas and carrying it forward with verticality and power
- His hybrid ‘central-but-wide ball-carrying style is exactly the trait Marsch admired
- This style is incredibly well-suited for Marsch’s signature narrow 4-2-2-2 formation, which heavily relied on transitional midfielders who could drift wide to create functional width while maintaining a compact central block
It is also worth noting that Marsch was full of praise for Musah even during his time at Elland Road.
While Farke operates with a very different philosophy, Musah’s raw physical traits would offer Leeds United an elite transition weapon they have lacked in tight fixtures.

AC Milan set July deadline as Ruben Amorim evaluates Musah
Securing Musah’s signature will require some patience from the Elland Road board. The midfielder is returning to the San Siro after a season-long loan spell at Atalanta, where he struggled to find consistent minutes and starting roles.
According to Milan News, new AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim is using the month of July to personally evaluate the American international during pre-season training.
Veteran Italian journalist Carlo Pellegatti confirmed the situation on his YouTube channel, noting that Musah is a player who “will be watched closely during pre-season”.
Only after these summer preparation weeks will Amorim decide whether Musah is surplus to requirements or if he has a role to play in Milan.
If the Rossoneri do decide to open the door to a transfer, Leeds United have already positioned themselves at the front of the queue.
