A fan telling Brenden Aaronson to join West Ham would have sounded ridiculous a couple of years ago, but it underlines just how dramatically his standing has changed after the best season of his Leeds United career.
Aaronson was asked to join West Ham while he was away with the United States at the World Cup. The Leeds star smiled and laughed off the suggestion after the fan suggested a move to the Hammers.
It was a brief exchange, but it highlighted something that would have been difficult to imagine not so long ago. Aaronson was one of Leeds’ most questioned players, now he’s catching the eye of rival fans.
Indeed, West Ham fans watched Aaronson tear them apart at Elland Road earlier in the season. The USA star scored Leeds’ opener in the 2-1 win in October, before running the entire pitch and hitting the bar.
Aaronson has finally delivered in the Premier League
The American enjoyed the strongest Leeds season of his career in 2025-26. He finished the campaign with four goals and five assists in 37 league appearances, while also playing more than 2,400 minutes.
Those numbers represented a huge improvement on his first Premier League campaign in 2022-23, when he struggled to consistently influence games during Leeds’ relegation season.
Is Brenden Aaronson our best player at the moment? 🔥
After a difficult year, a loan spell at Union Berlin followed in 2023-24 before he returned to play a major role in Leeds’ promotion-winning Championship campaign, scoring nine league goals in 2024-25.
Few Leeds players have changed supporter opinion like Aaronson
Aaronson was a divisive figure among Leeds supporters for a long period. Many questioned his decision to leave on loan after relegation, while others felt he lacked the physicality needed for English football.

Some thought that too often, he held onto possession for too long in attacking areas. That criticism has gradually faded as his performances have improved. Aaronson returned from Germany to much surprise.
He helped Leeds win promotion and then produced the most productive Premier League season of his Leeds career, doing more than most to change perceptions around his long-term value to the club.
Leeds now face an important decision over his future
Aaronson is one of four Leeds players currently involved at the World Cup alongside Noah Okafor, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Ao Tanaka. International exposure only increases attention on a club’s players.
NEW DEAL, SELL OR DO NOTHING: What should Leeds do with Brenden Aaronson? 💫
Especially those who have just produced a strong domestic campaign. All four have done that, with Okafor, Gudmundsson and Tanaka playing in the Premier League for the first time in their careers.
Aaronson’s Leeds contract expires in June 2027. Leeds are not under immediate pressure, but the club are moving towards the stage where decisions over extensions, sales and long-term planning become crucial.
The exchange with the West Ham supporter was not a transfer story in itself. What it really demonstrated was how much Aaronson’s reputation has changed, and perhaps, how his Leeds future is in some doubt.
