Leeds United manager Daniel Farke’s latest comments on his side’s search for Premier League survival risk turning the fans against him, as he refuses to address the reality of their slide into trouble.

Daniel Farke has been on the defensive this week, as Leeds gear up to restart their hunt for Premier League survival after the international break.

Leeds’ meek surrender against Nottingham Forest ramped up the pressure on Farke, as his side slipped ever closer to the bottom three in the top flight.

However, Farke has defended Leeds’ start to the season in the media ahead of the crunch game against Aston Villa, stating that his side remain on track.

With a difficult run of fixtures on the horizon, Farke risks alienating the Leeds fans with his commitment to repeating the party line, as the Elland Road crowd craves a dose of realism from their manager.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s YouTube channel, Farke stuck to his usual hymn sheet when discussing his side’s start to the season.

Beginning his assessment with the phrase “so far, so good”, Farke played the hits, stating that Leeds were on pace with their point-per-game target.

The Leeds boss said: “So far, so good. You can say after 11 games, we are there with the average that we need, one point average per game, which is not too bad.

“We were never in the relegation zone, which is outstanding because normally, as a newly promoted side, you would expect that at some point you are perhaps also in this region.

“So, overall, a good start. Performance-wise, a really good start, I think,” he said, before adding: “We are on track at the moment.”

Leeds United fans crave realism from Daniel Farke

Although Farke wants to present himself as the sanest man in the Elland Road asylum, his constant assertion that Leeds are on track is beginning to grate.

The evidence of Leeds’ performance in recent weeks does not stack up with Farke’s reading of the situation. Leeds’ last five games have brought four defeats, 11 goals against and three comprehensive away defeats in a row.

Fans do not want to hear Farke tear his side to shreds. But to hear him blame the referee for the defeat against Nottingham Forest was alarming. Jon Newsome accused Farke of burying his head in the sand, and his constant repetition of the line that Leeds are on track backs up that assessment.

Leeds are about to jump off the top box, straight into their toughest run of fixtures of the season. If Farke can coax four points out of those fixtures, he will be able to rightly remind the fans that he was right all along.

But if Leeds produce a performance similar to their abject surrender against Forest this weekend, Farke could see the Elland Road crowd turn on him in a way that he is yet to experience.
