It has been a largely successful international break for the majority of Leeds United players, as Daniel Farke welcomes back his absent stars ahead of Sunday’s trip to Swansea City.

Junior Firpo helped the Dominican Republic qualify for The Gold Cup for the first time in the nation’s footballing history, with a 6-1 win over Bermuda. Max Wober won his first minutes since September.

Ao Tanaka helped Japan beat China, while Wales quartet Joe Rodon, Karl Darlow, Dan James and Charlie Crew were all part of Craig Bellamy’s squad that secured promotion to the top tier of the Nations League.

Brenden Aaronson, Wilfried Gnonto, Sam Chambers and Manor Solomon were also in action for their countries as was Mateo Joseph. Spain Under-21 star Joseph scored on Tuesday night against Denmark.

What Spanish media said about Mateo Joseph after Tuesday night

The Leeds star has struggled in front of goal under Daniel Farke, netting only two goals in 15 league outings this season. But for Spain’s U21 side, Joseph has been absolutely lethal for the La Rojita.

Spanish newspaper AS gave their verdict on Joseph after his sixth goal in seven games for Spain’s U21 side. A neat turn and finish, and Spanish media were glowing following Spain U21’s 2-1 victory.

“The 2-0 win had the same form but different protagonists. This time it was Diego López who assisted Mateo Joseph, who turned in the area to score his fifth goal in six games with La Rojita,” AS wrote.

“His adaptation has been spectacular. If Samu settles in the senior side, it will not be a problem for [Santi] Denia because they have a no.9 guarantee in Joseph who averages a goal every 45 minutes,” they added.

Daniel Farke will hope Joseph can mirror Spain form for Leeds

What is interesting, is who will start against Joel Piroe’s old side Swansea City on Sunday. Whether Piroe gets the nod after missing out against QPR but scoring, or Farke continues with Joseph in the starting XI.

Joseph has been on fire for Spain’s u21 side, so much so that senior Spain manager Luis De La Fuente is keeping an eye on Joseph for the 2026 World Cup. Maintaining this form, and he could get a call-up.
