Junior Firpo and The Dominican Republic knew what they had to do in the early hours of Tuesday morning to create history, avoid defeat to Bermuda to qualify for the 2025 Gold Cup.
The Leeds United star declared to play for The Dominican Republic earlier this year, with the potential of playing for his country at The Olympics. But Junior Firpo said Leeds blocked him from participating.
Next up for Firpo then, was qualification for the 2025 Gold Cup. Something the Dominican Republic have never done and after a sparkling campaign, Firpo’s men knew they only needed to avoid defeat last night.
Taking on second-placed Bermuda in the group, the Dominican Republic not only avoided defeat but they ran riot at the Cibao Stadium in Santiago. A massive 6-1 win, creating history with Firpo front and centre.

Junior Firpo shines again as Dominican Republic secure 6-1 win
Pretty much a formality having smashed Dominica last week by the same scoreline, The Dominican Republic could have even lost to Bermuda and qualified – but they ran riot, with Firpo creating two goals.
But it was Dorny Romero that stole the limelight on the night. The striker, who plays in Kazakhstan for Aktobe, scored four goals on the night to help The Dominican Republic cruise to an easy 6-1 victory.
History made then, with the Dominican Republic winning all six qualifying matches and scoring a huge 27 goals in the process. Firpo himself scored three goals, and laid on three assists during the group stage.
History made, but also important minutes for Junior Firpo
Not only does the win see Firpo and The Dominican Republic qualify for the Gold Cup for the first time, where they will go up against Brenden Aaronson’s United States, Mexico and other big nations.
But it is also important minutes for a player that will miss Leeds’ next two matches against Swansea City and then Luton Town, with Firpo serving two more games of a three-match suspension.
| Position | Games | Points | Wins | Draws | Losses | GD |
