What position Leeds United would be in the Premier League table if games finished at 90 minutes exactly

Saturday afternoon saw Leeds United perform superbly again, activating a game plan that was almost enough to secure three points, only to concede in injury time again.

Leeds began the season perfectly, beating Everton at Elland Road. Paul Merson described Arsenal as a “free hit” and it was one, losing 5-0. But Leeds have rallied since, picking up five points from four matches.

Draws against Newcastle and then Bournemouth, defeat to Fulham, but only at the very last minute, and of course, a 3-1 win over Wolves. Leeds have eight points in total from six games, above a point a game.

It is widely expected that an average of a point a game will see clubs survive Premier League relegation at the end of 25-26, and it is Leeds’ aim. But where would Leeds be if games finished exactly on 90 minutes?

Leeds would be in Champions League places without injury time

Remarkably, Leeds would have only lost once this season without injury time, and the Whites would have secured three wins in six games. A draw at Fulham, ending 0-0, and a win over Bournemouth yesterday.

But of course, that is not the case, and Leeds sit in eleventh place. Three points worse off than where they would be had they held on in injury time. Had Gabriel Gudmundsson not scored an own goal in London.

Had Eli Junior Kroupi netted a 93rd-minute equaliser. If those goals had been avoided and Leeds held onto the scorelines going into injury time, Leeds would be as high as fourth (ahead of Sunday’s fixtures).

Leeds United’s five fixtures until November international break

The October break is approaching but before Thomas Tuchel and the rest of the National Team bosses steal away club players, Leeds host Tottenham next Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off at Elland Road.

After the international break, four games. Arguably, Leeds’ most-winnable stretch of matches, as Leeds go to Turf Moor to face Burnley and host West Ham at Elland Road. Then Brighton, and Nottingham Forest.
