Former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa just continues to break more records as manager of Uruguay.
Bielsa and his Uruguay side made the trip to his native homeland to face World Cup champions Argentina, who had made a 100% start to CONMEBOL qualification for the next tournament in 2026.
Argentina had won all four of their matches having not conceded a single goal but that all changed in the early hours of this morning thanks to Bielsa’s team.
Bielsa had ended Uruguay’s 22-year wait for a win over Brazil in the last international break, but went one step further as his side defeated Argentina on their own patch, 2-0.
This is the first time Uruguay have beaten Argentina and Brazil in the same calendar year since 1960, a run which spans across an incredible 63 years.
Bielsa continues to break records at Uruguay
Having beaten Chile 2-1 in his first competitive match as manager, Uruguay were beaten by Ecuador, before then picking up a 2-2 draw against Colombia.
All things considered, that was probably considered as an average start to their qualification, but to then go and beat both Argentina and Brazil in back-to-back matches is some achievement.
Uruguay now sit second in the CONMEBOL qualification table with 10 points from their five matches, and are well on course to qualify for the tournament in 2026.
Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez were the men on the scoresheet last night, with the latter’s form since working under Bielsa having been superb.
Uruguay are next in action late on Tuesday night when they host Bolivia, in what should be another win and step closer to qualifying for the World Cup.
