One of Marcelo Bielsa’s biggest strengths during his time at Leeds United was how he was able to improve players.
There are so many examples from his time at Leeds of individuals who were seemingly done at Elland Road, that then went onto achieve great things at the club.
Kalvin Phillips was converted from an average Championship midfielder, into a 30-time capped England international. Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling all got the chance to play Premier League football because of Bielsa.
Patrick Bamford is another. The work Bielsa did with the 30-year-old also saw him represent the Three Lions on the back of an incredible season that brought 17 Premier League goals.
And Bielsa may now have just worked his latest piece of magic on Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, who seems to have gone up a level since working alongside the former Leeds boss at Uruguay.
Bielsa performs latest bit of magic on Nunez
During his debut campaign at Liverpool, Nunez was seen as an inconsistent, incredibly raw striker. That said, his potential was always there to see, it just needed bringing out.
Bielsa was appointed as Uruguay’s new manager back in May and while Nunez was not involved in his first international camp, the two have been working closely together since then.
By Nunez’s own admission, they have been having video calls together on where he can improve. On the basis of this season, and particularly last night, it is paying off.

Nunez has seven goals and four assists in 14 appearances for Liverpool so far this term, but his goal in last night’s Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth was the best of the lot.
Despite taking a poor first touch, Nunez was able to create the space for himself just inside the area, before firing a powerful, curling effort into the top corner to send Jurgen Klopp’s side into the next round.
It is clear to see Bielsa had a massive impact on the striker’s form this season, and that is really starting to pay off both for him, and his team.
