Former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa picked up his second competitive win as Uruguay boss during the early hours of this morning.
Having beaten Chile in their first match of CONMEBOL World Cup qualification, Uruguay were then defeated 2-1 by Ecuador, and held to a 2-2 draw in Colombia last week.
Uruguay will have been feeling the pressure a tad heading into their game last night, particularly given that South American powerhouse Brazil were the visitors.
Brazil were unbeaten during the entirety of their previous World Cup qualification campaign, and had not tasted defeat to Uruguay since 2001.
Incredibly that is a run that spanned 37 matches and 22 years, which based on some of Uruguay’s success over the years, is a quite incredible statistic.
Bielsa ends Uruguay’s 22-year wait for win over Brazil
However, Bielsa has been able to end that 22-year long wait for a win over Brazil at the first attempt, with Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez the star of the show.
Not only was Nunez able to net the opening goal just a few minutes before half-time, but he also provided the assist for Nicolas de la Cruz to double Uruguay’s advantage.
Quite incredibly, Uruguay were able to restrict Brazil to just two shots during the 90 minutes, none of which were on target.
His former Leeds star Raphinha was not in action for the visitors in the game, as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Bielsa and his side are now up to second in the table after four matches of qualification, with only Argentina, who still have a 100% record, above them.
