What Leeds United sources say about the 49ers’ plans for January and if money will be spent

After the summer window closed, Robbie Evans confirmed that Leeds United had reached the borderline when it came to Profit & Sustainability Rules. A new signing would push Leeds into the red.

Leeds tried to sign Harry Wilson on deadline day and according to Evans’ comments, that would have seen Leeds overstep the line. If Leeds have exceeded PSR come June 30 2026, they will break the rules.

Who do you want Leeds to sign in January? A striker surely has to be the priority!

No matter how harsh and how constricted Leeds are compared to their Premier League rivals, the £100m Leeds spent in the summer was as far as they could go without stepping over the line come June 2026.

Leeds can, of course, ease their position by selling a player who would rake in profit. Leeds are willing to listen to offers for Willy Gnonto, while Pascal Struijk would also represent a significant PSR saving.

The 49ers’ plan for January with Paraag Marathe now desperate

Leeds are absolutely desperate to survive in the Premier League, and not just for the obvious reasons. The Guardian explains that the club’s redevelopment of Elland Road has Paraag Marathe desperate to survive.

To that end, Leeds are willing to invest, even if it means risking PSR. Whether Evans’ comments were a future negotiation tactic, or Leeds are on the PSR limit is unclear. Plans for January have been revealed.

Indeed, The Guardian state that Leeds’ desperation to avoid relegation means there is money to spend in the January window and the 49ers are willing to put their money where their mouth is, regardless of PSR.

Should Leeds follow Nottingham Forest’s path and risk a points deduction? 💸

“This summer, we spent everything we could. Unequivocally, we are maxing PSR out this season. If we had gone on to other targets [on deadline day], the consequences would have been seen in the current roster. More key players from last season would have had to go.”

Who are Leeds expected to try and sign in the January window?

Having attempted to sign Wales star Wilson at the end of the summer window, it feels like Leeds’ priority will be an attacking player who can create. One that can take set-pieces, with Sean Longstaff injured.

Wilson remains out of contract next summer, with the Fulham star impressing for club and country this season. It is believed Wilson was keen on a move to Leeds in the summer, and could be a cheap signing.

Since the window closed, plenty of other players have been linked with Leeds. Coventry City striker Haji Wright, Midtjylland’s Franculino, Brangantino’s Jhon Jhon and Ireland hero Troy Parrott have been touted.

But with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha scoring goals, the chances are Leeds would rather an attacking midfielder over a striker. If Leeds can spend, signing a creative player must be a priority.
