What Leeds United did for the first time in the club’s entire history in draw at Norwich City

A cold, wet draw at Norwich City saw Leeds United actually make history on Tuesday night.

The Whites were forced to settle for a share of the spoils at Carrow Road but an incredible statistic has since come to light about something Daniel Farke did.

Farke was visiting his former club for the third time as Leeds boss, with the point ensuring he is now unbeaten in all five matches against the Canaries.

Leeds were forced to come from behind in order to do that, with Largie Ramazani’s second half equaliser cancelling out Josh Sargent’s early opener from the spot.

Farke was criticised by Leeds fans for his choice of subs on the night but with Sunderland clearly in mind on Friday, it could turn out to be a valuable point at the end of the season.

Leeds make club history in Norwich draw

Due to the knee injury sustained by Ethan Ampadu in Leeds’ win over Coventry City, Farke was forced into making one change to his starting XI.

Ao Tanaka came in for his full Leeds debut after impressing in his first few cameos off the bench, and once again caught the eye of Jermaine Beckford and Tony Dorigo.

And it was his introduction into the team that saw Leeds do something for the first time in their history, according to Opta’s Leeds stat man Jonny Cooper.

Cooper says Farke’s starting line-up at Carrow Road included 11 different nationalities and this has never been done before in the entire 105-year history of the club.

Illan Meslier (France), Jayden Bogle (England), Joe Rodon (Wales), Pascal Struijk (Netherlands), Junior Firpo (Dominican Republic), Ilia Gruev (Bulgaria), Ao Tanaka (Japan), Wilfried Gnonto (Italy), Brenden Aaronson (USA), Largie Ramazani (Belgium) and Mateo Joseph (Spain).

Unfortunately due to Gruev’s early injury, this line-up did not last too long, but it is still incredible to think this has never been done before at Elland Road.

Farke shares initial update on Ilia Gruev injury

As mentioned, Gruev’s injury meant Leeds were forced to bring on Joe Rothwell for his first substantial number of minutes in a league game since joining from Bournemouth.

Rothwell’s nationality is, of course, the same as Bogle’s and he could well be in line for his full Leeds Championship debut at Sunderland, based on Farke’s comments on Gruev post-match.

He said: “Not good enough to keep going. Knee injury. Struggled to turn. Have to wait for the assessment. Tomorrow there will be a scan. Does not look great at the moment. Ao and Joe stepped up.

“Second half, positioning, first game together, we were open and could not control their counters. No criticism. Happy they delivered, especially Ao and Joe in their first proper league game. We will learn from this and improve positioning. Compliments to these lads in these circumstances.”
