Ally McCoist says Daniel Farke has just received a ‘nightmare’ bit of news at Leeds United

Leeds United have been building some momentum with recent results in the Championship but it is not all positivity at Elland Road.

Daniel Farke’s side are now up to fifth in the Championship after their latest 3-0 victory over Coventry City but the depth of their squad is seriously being put to the test.

Leeds face two long, difficult away matches in the space of just four days this week as the trip to Norwich City is followed by a Friday night affair at Sunderland.

Ethan Ampadu, Max Wober, Manor Solomon, Dan James and Isaac Schmidt are all out of the game at Carrow Road, and with such little time to recover before Sunderland, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they are all absent again.

After the international break, Leeds are then in action against Sheffield United at Elland Road, again on the Friday, which is a nightmare for the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Ao Tanaka and Junior Firpo.

McCoist reacts to ‘nightmare’ Ethan Ampadu Leeds injury

Out of the five aforementioned players who are injured, Leeds captain Ampadu is undoubtedly the biggest loss.

Ampadu could be out for as long as 10 weeks and so may not even be back playing properly until January 2025, which is the first time Leeds will be without him since he joined from Chelsea.

Leeds do have Ao Tanaka, Ilia Gruev, Joe Rothwell and potentially even Charlie Crew to cover him in midfield, but it is his ability to cover at the back which could truly test the squad.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (1 October) morning, pundit Ally McCoist believes it is an absolute ‘nightmare’ for Leeds to lose Ampadu to injury.

He said: “Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu will be out until at least January having sustained a knee ligament injury in the Championship win against Coventry.

“Nightmare, we’re seeing so many injuries now and the knee ligaments are the ones, ankle ligaments are the worst as you know.”

Every game Ampadu is likely to miss for Leeds

Tanaka proved against Coventry he is a more than able deputy for Ampadu but there is no doubt Leeds are a better team with him in it.

However, Leeds are simply have to going to get used to playing without him due to the sheer volume of games he is likely to miss.

Providing the 10 week absence from team training is accurate, with another two on top of that to regain sharpness, he is every game he could potentially miss.
