What Brenden Aaronson has told his agent after reports he could return to Leeds this month

There have been reports that have suggested that Brenden Aaronson could return to Leeds United in the January window – but Aaronson has shared what he wants to do this month, to his agent.

After starring for Salzburg, some of which was under Jesse Marsch, 23-year-old Aaronson joined Leeds in the summer of 2022 for a huge £25m. It came after having a hand of 28 goals in 66 Salzburg games.

But he scored one goal in 40 games for Leeds. His physique an often criticism among Leeds supporters. He was one of eight senior players to leave us on loan in the summer, using the relegation loan clause.

He has struggled at Union. No goals, no assists, a red card, just five starts from 23 games. It was said in December that Daniel Farke would be open to his return. But a decision that would be very unpopular.

Now, a report from German magazine Kicker claims that Aaronson has told his agent he wants to stay at Union this month, rather than returning: “I’m here and I want to be here. I like the boys and the club.”

Leeds do need a no.10. The club tried to sign Matt O’Riley, Nadiem Amiri and other attacking midfielders in the summer. But we have since used striker Joel Piroe out of position, and Georginio Rutter, as 10’s.

By the end of the month, Leeds might sign a playmaker. We might not. Aaronson might fit the bill. He might not. But ultimately, it looks like Aaronson wants to make his Union spell worth it, and will stay.

Indeed, he scored in a recent mid-season friendly for Union in a 2-0 win over Arminia, neatly finishing into the far corner. Does he have a future at Leeds? He believes there is still an avenue for that.
