What Blackburn manager John Eustace did to the Leeds United fans that almost got him sent off

John Eustace has clearly got under Daniel Farke’s skin since the German became Leeds United manager but on Saturday afternoon, it seemed that Eustace was also a source of frustration for Leeds fans.

Leeds United’s winning streak at Elland Road came to an end on Saturday as Blackburn did an excellent job of nullifying this Leeds attack. Even then, the Whites managed to take the lead in the 91st minute.

Leeds scored a penalty after Mateo Joseph had been taken down, Pascal Struijk scoring the resulting penalty. But, with Leeds looking as if they would go and secure a 16th win of the season, an equaliser.

In similar fashion to the 4-3 win over Swansea, two goals occurred in injury time. A deep Blackburn corner resulted in Danny Batth scrambling the ball into the the net, ruining Illan Meslier’s 15th clean sheet.

Eustace knows how to get the job done against Leeds and Farke

That was the fourth occasion Eustace has faced Farke as Leeds manager, and in the previous three, Eustace has won all three. One with Birmingham, a 1-0 win in August 2023 and then two with Blackburn.

The latest being the 1-0 win at Ewood Park in which Todd Cantwell scored a penalty. Today, that losing streak may have ended, but Eustace clearly has Farke’s number and Farke does not to face him again.

Eustace will have wound up Farke in terms of his form against the German, but on Saturday, Eustace was threatened with a red card for winding up Leeds fans. Adam Pope reported, as per the BBC website:

“John Eustace is winding up the Leeds fans and he has been warned by the fourth official he will be sent-off if he carries on. The game has got away from the referee a bit here,” Pope said in commentary.

Daniel Farke now has a bit of a crisis in the Leeds defence

With just three days now until Leeds go to Hull City on Saturday, who starts at full-back? Junior Firpo has been joined by Jayden Bogle on the injury list and possibly Sam Byram, who came off at half-time.

Max Wober came on at left-back after a recent injury and was probably rushed into playing ahead of what Farke might have liked. But he impressed at left-back and came close to putting Leeds 2-1 into the lead.

On the right, Ethan Ampadu came off the bench. But what about Isaac Schmidt? It will be interesting to see who lines up on either side of the defence on Saturday when the Whites go to Hull City.
